Preamble:

WHEREAS the Official Alberta Road Map published by Alberta Economic Development provides information for placement of destination signage along primary and secondary highways; andWHEREAS these guidelines are based on the classification of the various communities in the area and their relationship to the highway network; andWHEREAS various rural municipal government offices are based in hamlets;

Operative Clause:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties request the Province of Alberta to modify the Official Alberta Road Map to include communities with local government offices as regional destination points.

Member Background:

There are hamlets in the province that house the local municipal office. People travelling to the local municipal office find little to no directional signage until they are very near these hamlets.For example, in response to visitor feedback, the M.D. of Clear Hills has lobbied to install additional signage on Secondary Highway 685 at Grimshaw to provide direction signage for Worsley. To date our requests have not been successful.We believe other municipal offices in similar situations would also benefit if the Official Alberta Road Map were modified to include smaller communities that are the seat of local government as regional destination points.
