Updated Green Communities Guide Available

The Land Stewardship Centre has updated the guide to highlight nature-based approaches communities are undertaking

In 2009, the Land Stewardship Centre (LSC) published the Green Communities Guide to help growing communities plan and implement strategies to conserve water, protect water quality, preserve agricultural land, and protect critical open spaces and wildlife habitat. In recent years, municipalities have increased their use of technology and other innovative approaches to stewardship and sustainability, such as utilizing nature-based solutions to address development challenges in growing communities. As a result of these changes, the LSC has updated the guide to ensure that it can continue to be a reliable and impactful resource.

The new Green Communities Guide is a living, digital resource that highlights the innovative, nature-based approaches communities are taking to managing development with respect to impacts on natural systems. The guide is designed for use by municipal planners, developers, and community groups. It features innovative approaches to sustainable development including:

  • Riparian management
  • Xeriscaping
  • Naturalization
  • Storm water wetlands
  • Brownfield reclamation
  • Permaculture
