Update: TEC Bridge Inspection and Management System (BIMS) Modernization Project

Earlier this summer, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) outlined the Ministry’s plans for a multi‑year modernization of the province’s bridge inspection and management systems. This modernization is intended to introduce new bridge inspection standards, procedures, and information management software to improve the quality and consistency of bridge data, support risk-based decision-making, and strengthen long-term asset management for both the province and municipalities.

As part of their engagement, TEC staff developed this one-page summary to provide more information for RMA members, hosted a webinar for rural municipalities, and conducted a survey of municipal administrators and bridge inspectors to gain valuable feedback, the deadline for which was extended until September 8th. Dozens of rural municipalities have since responded to the survey, and TEC has asked the RMA to thank members for the level of engagement and feedback received.

Over the next few months, TEC will utilize municipalities’ survey responses to help inform the selection of a new bridge inspection standard and to develop a request for proposals (RFP) for a new bridge management system software provider. Select municipalities who responded to the survey will be contacted by TEC staff to provide further information and additional context throughout this process.

TEC staff are expected to provide a progress update on this project in early 2027. RMA will continue to monitor this project and communicate any updates to members as they are released.
