The Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act came into effect January 1, 2016. To support the implementation of the Act through in-depth consultation, the Government of Alberta formed six technical working groups to consider impacts that reflect the uniqueness of the agriculture industry. The technical working groups include the following focus areas:
- Employment Standards Code
- Labour Relations Code
- OHS: Review of existing requirements and exemptions (two working groups)
- OHS: Best practices for agriculture
- OHS: Education, training and certification
The AAMDC is represented on the Technical Working Group focused on the OHS Safety Code by President Al Kemmere. The working groups met over the summer and will be breaking for the harvest season. The technical groups are working towards providing recommendations that will inform the Codes and regulations that will support the Act.
More information on the technical working groups is available here.
