RMA releases its findings regarding the LPRT’s subdivision and development appeal process.
In 2024, several members reached out to RMA with concerns surrounding their experiences with subdivision and development hearings at the Land and Property Rights Tribunal (LPRT). The LPRT has existed in its current form since 2021, following the amalgamation of the Land Compensation Board, Municipal Government Board, New Home Buyer Protection Board, and Surface Rights Board.
As a result of members’ concerns, RMA staff engaged with a small working group of member municipalities to learn more about their experiences, researched the LPRT’s governing legislation and policies, and consulted directly with the LPRT throughout late 2024. RMA’s goal was to develop a report regarding the tribunal’s subdivision and development appeal process that recommended improvements to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and consistency of the tribunal’s operations.
RMA’s report is now complete and can be found on the RMA website.
Through an external consultant, Alberta Municipal Affairs (MA) began conducting their own review of the LPRT’s business processes in April 2025. RMA was pleased to participate in the ministry’s review and engagement and looks forward to reviewing MA’s findings later this year.
