RMA Justice Member Committee – Now Seeking Member Participants

RMA is accepting applications from members to participate on a member committee focused on recommending reforms to Canada’s justice system through a rural lens.

As directed in Resolution 15-24FMember Committee to Understand the Criminal Justice System, the RMA is forming a committee to examine and understand the challenges of addressing rural crime, improve members’ collective understanding of how the Canadian criminal justice system functions in relation to rural crime and community safety, and develop criminal justice system-focused recommendations that directly relate to enhancing safety in rural communities.

This Committee will be comprised of one elected official from each of RMA’s five districts and chaired by a member of the RMA Board of Directors. For additional information regarding timelines, expectations, responsibilities, and remuneration, please refer to the Terms of Reference.

Through involvement on this committee, members will have an opportunity to collaboratively form practical recommendations to support rural community safety across the province. RMA welcomes applications that represent diverse perspectives and experiences within the Committee composition. RMA will specifically be evaluating applications through the following questions:

  • What is your interest in this Committee?
  • How do you define rural community safety?
  • What lived, professional, or community-based justice system-related insights would you bring to this Committee?
  • How have you interacted with the justice system in your professional, volunteer, or personal experience?
  • Do you have any committee or governance experience in working with the justice system? If so, to what extent?
  • What pressures or challenges is your municipality facing in relation to community safety?

To be considered for the Committee, please provide a written response to the above questions as well as any other information you believe may be relevant, in Word or PDF format to kallie@rmalberta.com. As part of their application, all applicants must provide a letter of support from their municipality, indicating recognition that per diem costs will not be borne by the RMA.

Applications from interested RMA member elected officials will be accepted for consideration until July 31, 2026. RMA expects that committee members will be selected prior to the end of August 2026, and the committee’s work will commence in September 2026. For further details on the committee’s scope, meeting frequency, and duration, refer to the Terms of Reference, linked above.
