The RMA’s Quasi-Judicial Agencies Committee held its third meeting on July 25
On July 25, 2023, the Quasi-Judicial Agencies Member Committee held their third meeting. This committee will run until September and will help gather information on several quasi-judicial agencies in Alberta, particularly how their approval processes impact rural municipal land use planning.
The following members are serving as district representatives:
- District 1: Kelly Christman, County of Newell
- District 2: Brent Ramsay, Red Deer County
- District 3: Doug Drozd, County of Barrhead
- District 4: Tyler Airth, Big Lakes County
- District 5: Cindy Trautman, Camrose County
- Chair: Jason Schneider, District 1 Director (Vulcan County)
At this meeting, the committee met with a representative from the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) to discuss their notification process, consideration of public interest, and compliance concerns. The committee also discussed the results of the member survey on municipal experiences in interacting with the AER, Alberta Utilities Commission, and Natural Resources Conservation Board. The survey was sent to mayors, reeves, and CAOs and closed on July 11, 2023. The survey provided the committee with insight into the experiences of rural municipalities in working with different quasi-judicial agencies.
The committee plans to meet with other quasi-judicial agencies and other relevant associations in August. The RMA will update members on the committee’s process and next steps periodically.
