The Government of Alberta has announced a public engagement on the future of nuclear energy developments in Alberta. As part of phase one of the engagement, the province has appointed an expert panel to engage with stakeholders across the province and has launched a public survey to help inform a nuclear energy roadmap for Alberta.
The Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel, chaired by Chantelle de Jonge, the Parliamentary Secretary for Affordability and Utilities, will advise the Government of Alberta on its potential role in advancing the nuclear energy industry in the province. Panel members will work directly with stakeholders, Indigenous communities, and organizations to gather their perspectives and feedback on the advancement of the nuclear energy industry in Alberta, which will help inform the development of a comprehensive roadmap to nuclear energy and an associated regulatory framework. The panel will make a final report for the Minister of Affordability and Utilities by March 1, 2026.
In the online Nuclear Energy Development survey, members of the public can share their views about nuclear energy, provide commentary on topics that require more information, and inform future engagement activities. The survey closes on September 25, 2025.
In addition to the online survey and the Panel’s activities, municipalities and other stakeholders are invited to provide written feedback on the development of a nuclear industry in Alberta through a Request for Information on the Alberta Purchasing Connection website. The period for municipalities and other stakeholders to provide written feedback ends on October 25, 2025.
Future phases of this engagement, scheduled to begin later this year and continue into 2026, will include in‑person meetings and engagement sessions with municipalities, Indigenous communities, industry, and other stakeholders. RMA will monitor the engagement’s progress and share any updates with members.
RMA will be participating in phase one of the engagement by responding to the survey and providing a written submission to Alberta Affordability and Utilities to ensure the rural municipal perspective is represented.
For questions or more information, members are encouraged to review the province’s engagement webpage, review the province’s media release, or connect with the province’s nuclear engagement team by reaching out to nuclear.engagement@gov.ab.ca.
