Progress to Support Brownfield Development Underway

The AAMDC has continued to advocate for the Government of Alberta to enable brownfield redevelopment, which supports environmental stewardship and economic development in Alberta’s municipalities.

Alberta Environment and Parks recently convened a technical working group to address recommendations identified in the 2012 Brownfield Redevelopment Working Group Report related to liability closure. The AAMDC was involved in the Brownfield Redevelopment Working Group and is pleased that action is being taken to address some of the identified recommendations.

The technical working group, comprised of representatives from industry, municipal associations, and the Government of Alberta, is tasked with considering proposed amendments to the Remediation Certificate Regulation related to liability closure mechanisms, reporting and remediation requirements and risk management processes. The goal is to clarify regulatory requirements and remove key impediments to brownfield redevelopment prior to the expiration of the Remediation Certificate Regulation in 2018.

The working group will be meeting throughout May and June to develop a draft regulatory amendment package that can be released for feedback from municipalities and other stakeholders over the summer.  It is anticipated that Alberta Environment and Parks will submit a finalized amendment package to Cabinet in the fall of 2017.

More information will be shared via member bulletin as it becomes available.
