Transport Canada has announced new funding for municipalities to improve rail safety in their communities. The Rail Safety Improvement Program consists of two components, and totals $55 million to be distributed over three years.
Infrastructure, Technology and Research Component
The Infrastructure, Technology and Research component funds safety improvements along rail lines and on rail property under federal and provincial jurisdiction. Municipalities are eligible to apply for this funding if a project aims to address rail line safety issues or reduce the number of injuries and death from accidents along rail lines and on rail property. Public Education and Awareness Component
The Public Education and Awareness component funds activities aimed at reducing railway grade crossing collisions and trespassing incident on railways property, particularly in high-risk areas. Municipalities are eligible to apply for this funding if a project aims to increase public awareness of rail safety issues, promote safe practice at road/railway grade crossings, or promote safety on railway property.
