Grade Crossing Inventory Available Online

Transport Canada has provided information for municipalities regarding the Grade Crossings Regulations (GCR). As the local road manager, municipalities are responsible for assessing their grade crossings and for determining whether any modifications are required for items that are within their area of responsibility, such as the road approach. They should also contact the respective railway companies to engage on what upgrades, if any, might be necessary to comply with the GCR. These upgrades have a completion deadline of November 28, 2021.

To help Transport Canada, railway owners, and road authorities understand where crossings are, Transport Canada has an online inventory of rail grade crossings. The list of grade crossings produced by this system provides an inventory of the location and characteristics of all railway crossings in Canada. It is also part of the information that the Railway Safety Oversight Program uses in assessing risk and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

RMA members are encouraged to look at the list and send any missing crossings to Transport Canada at railsafety@tc.gc.ca.
