In response to an increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires, the Government of Alberta (GOA) has announced a Wildfire Mitigation Strategy that aims to mitigate the negative impacts of wildfire. The strategy introduces a “whole-of-society” approach to mitigating the risk of wildfires, which includes municipalities. Further engagement with municipalities is highlighted in several areas of the strategy; RMA will seek clarity and share any announced engagement opportunities with members.
The strategy was developed following an engagement in 2024 and 2025, which RMA participated in and shared with members. The strategy makes recommendations related to six key themes:
- Increase knowledge and understanding
- Strengthen community and Indigenous partnerships
- Review legislation, policy and governance
- Pursue enhanced technology and innovation
- Integrate wildfire mitigation in landscape planning
- Prioritize hazardous fuels management
The strategy provides a framework for further action to be taken, and RMA is reviewing to identify ways to provide additional input as the strategy is implemented. This work will include identifying links between the recommendations put forward in RMA’s Wildfire Working Group Report and the strategy.
