Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors is conducting engagement sessions with municipalities to support the government’s ongoing review of the Transportation Network Companies Regulation.
The Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) is engaging with municipalities to support the government’s ongoing review of the Transportation Network Companies Regulation, 100/2016 (TNCR), which governs the operation, licensing, and oversight of ride-sharing services in Alberta. As part of this review, TEC is hosting engagement sessions to hear directly from municipalities.
In Alberta, TNCs such as Uber and Lyft are regulated under the TNCR and supplemented by additional municipal bylaws related to licensing, insurance, fees, and enforcement. This has raised industry concerns about overlapping and inconsistent requirements across jurisdictions creating operational challenges.
TEC is seeking input on how to improve coordination between provincial and municipal oversight as well as provide municipalities with the opportunity to share local perspectives, identify regulatory challenges, and help shape potential changes to the TNCR. Key topics include harmonizing regulatory requirements across jurisdictions, reducing red tape, and exploring ways to enhance rural and intermunicipal transportation through improved use of ride-share services.
TEC is hosting three engagement sessions, as follows:
- In-person: Monday, July 21, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in Edmonton
- In-person: Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in Calgary
- Virtual: Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
TEC has retained Deloitte, a third-party consultant, to facilitate the stakeholder sessions. Municipalities interested in participating are asked to confirm attendance by completing this brief survey. TEC is requesting the survey be completed by July 10, 2025.
Please note that each municipality may register up to two participants, and availability for the in-person sessions is limited. Participation will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
