Government of Alberta Takes Additional Steps to Address Scrap Metal Theft

After proclaiming the Scrap Metal Dealers and Recyclers Identification Act in November 2019, the Government of Alberta has recently made amendments to strengthen the Act and has established an accompanying regulation to address scrap metal theft.

The changes will implement new duties for scrap metal dealers and recyclers related to documenting sellers and purchasers of scrap metal. The amendment also enables law enforcement to conduct compliance investigations and establish penalties for contravention of the act.

For details on the act, regulation, and how the changes will address scrap metal theft, view this overview document provided by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General.

The action taken on this issue by the Government of Alberta aligns with the requests made in resolution 21-18F: Scrap Metal (Copper) Theft. This resolution will next be formally reviewed for the RMA Fall 2020 Advocacy Report Card.
