Government of Alberta Launches Police Funding Model Engagement

The Government of Alberta has launched an engagement on a review of the Police Funding Model (PFM), to take place in May and June 2025.

According to the Government of Alberta, the engagement will be conducted by an independent contractor who will “evaluate the police funding model and identify potential changes to ensure it continues to meet the needs of municipalities policed by the RCMP,” with the goal “to identify potential changes to ensure the police funding model promotes long-term fairness, shared fiscal responsibility and sustainability.”

The GOA plans to seek input from:

  • Municipal officials policed by the Provincial Police Service Agreement (PPSA)
  • Municipal administrators
  • Alberta Municipalities
  • Rural Municipalities of Alberta
  • RCMP

While the GOA has launched an engagement website, there are currently no details as to specific timelines or methods of engagement. RMA is seeking more information on the engagement process and will provide updates to members as it becomes available.

RMA is in the process of developing a member engagement guide, to be provided in the coming weeks. RMA has also recently made available several resources related to both the PFM and other recent changes to policing:

  • PFM member resource – provides a detailed overview of how the PFM currently functions and general priority areas for change.
  • What We Heard” summary of RMA’s fall 2024 PFM member survey.
  • Bill 49 member resource – While Bill 49 is not directly related to the PFM, it introduces significant complexity into how municipalities that choose to receive policing through the IAPS (as authorized in Bill 49) will impact the PFM.
