Government of Alberta Launches Fire Level of Service Engagement

The Government of Alberta is seeking municipal input on possible legislative changes to require municipalities and Metis Settlements that operate a fire service to develop a level of service.

Municipal Affairs is collecting input through a survey, which closes on July 4, 2025, as well as through a virtual engagement session taking place on June 24, 2025 from 9:00am – 12:00pm. The Government of Alberta has provided a link for the engagement session directly to municipalities. If your municipality did not receive a link, please contact firecomm@gov.ab.ca.

RMA is currently seeking more details on the policy direction leading to the engagement, as well as conducting analysis on possible risks and benefits of such a requirement for municipalities. RMA is also seeking a change to engagement timelines given that many municipalities most interested in this issue are currently responding to wildfires. RMA will update members if new information on the process or the issue becomes available.
