Government of Alberta launches 90-day review of Alberta’s electricity market system
The Government of Alberta has committed to consult with stakeholders on whether Alberta should return to an energy-only market or create a capacity market within 90 days. Below is a short description of both models:
- Energy-only market – where power plants are paid only for the energy produced
- Capacity market – where generators are paid for having generation available to supply, whether any energy is produced and supplied.
A June 14, 2019 news release from Energy Minister Sonya Savage announced the review. Click here to read the news release providing information regarding the review process.
If you are interested in participating in the review, the Government of Alberta is interested in hearing:
- Your preferred market design (energy-only or capacity); and
- The rationale for your preference, including impacts on investment, affordability, and reliability.
Please submit your written feedback to electricity@gov.ab.ca by Friday June 28, 2019. All submissions must be a maximum of three (3) pages in length.
