As we start a new year and are in the midst of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, RMA Insurance would like to take the opportunity to thank all firefighters, both volunteer and employed. We understand the dedication and sacrifice that goes into working as firefighters, and we appreciate everything that they do to keep our communities and municipalities safe.
Being a firefighter can be a challenging and rewarding experience, but when it comes to their health, so many complications could arise from the strenuous demand of the profession.
Did you know that 85% of duty related fatality claims for firefighters are from cancer? According to Health Canada, firefighters have a 9% higher risk of a cancer diagnosis and are 15% more likely to succumb to the diagnosis than the general population.
How you can help prevent the exposure that could be affecting firefighters:
- Ensure each firefighter has proper personal protective equipment.
- Encourage regular health screening.
- Test and fit for appropriate and approved breathing apparatus.
- Ask for feedback from the fire departments on a regular basis. Is there anything they require to protect the communities in a safer manner?
- Regularly review your VFIS schedule and report to your MSR.
To make sure your firefighters get the best coverage available, RMA Insurance continues to work with providing coverage through VFIS to help fill the gaps.
