Broadband Connectivity in Rural Canada – Submit your brief!

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology is undertaking a study on broadband connectivity in rural Canada. The primary focus of this study is to develop a plan to improve rural connectivity and demonstrate the impact of broadband connectivity to rural economies. Through the study, the committee intends to make recommendations that identify and address:

  • What constitutes acceptable high-speed service
  • The financial challenges of implementing high-speed services
  • The regulatory changes to ensure the implementation of high-speed service

The committee will also report its findings to the House of Commons upon completion.

As part of their process, the Committee is encouraging interested stakeholders to submit their views through a brief. This input provides AAMDC members with an opportunity to provide the federal government with perspectives about broadband connectivity issues unique to rural Alberta. The AAMDC is encouraging members to complete and submit a brief to make their challenges and perspectives known.

Submission conditions are as follows:

  • Only one (1) brief can be submitted per person or per organization;
  • Briefs must not exceed ten (10) pages, including any footnotes, figures and appendices;
  • The name of the author or organization must be clearly indicated on the cover page.

In order to help with the brief submission, you may consult the Guide for Submitting Briefs to the House of Commons Committee, and an example brief by the Rural Ontario Municipal Association is available here.

Briefs can be submitted by an online form or by email to INDU@parl.gc.ca.

At this time, there is no deadline for the brief submission, but members are encouraged to make their submission as soon as possible.
