Below the Drill – Week 2

In a six-week campaign, RMA will share how Government of Alberta policies have impacted municipal tax revenue

In recent years, the Government of Alberta (GOA) has implemented several policy initiatives to reduce oil and gas industry costs at the expense of municipal revenue. Below the Drill will share information on lost municipal tax revenue as a result of provincial government policies.

This week Below the Drill explores the removal of the Well Drilling Equipment Tax (WDET). The WDET was a tax that municipalities could charge on the equipment used to drill wells with the rationale that the movement of this equipment on municipal roads causes significant wear on this infrastructure. The WDET was removed in 2020, and from 2021 to 2023 municipalities missed out on $91.74 million in tax revenue.
