RMA has created a reference document of rural municipal land use bylaw amendments
The Government of Alberta has determined provincial regulations for where cannabis retail facilities can be located, including a 100-meter buffer between cannabis retailers, schools, and health care facilities. Municipalities will have the ability to amend this buffer to suit their community’s needs, and this can be addressed through changes to the land use bylaw (LUB). Cannabis Resources for Members
Did you know that RMA has a Planning for Cannabis webpage dedicated to information on cannabis legalization? Included on this page are many resources related to municipal LUBs. One of these documents, recently updated, analyzed the current LUBs of RMA’s 69-member municipalities and how they included language on cannabis, cannabis production facilities, and cannabis retail facilities. The document also includes LUBs with language on medical cannabis.
Quick facts:
- Eight out of 69 (12%) of RMA member municipalities have amended their LUBs to accommodate for recreational cannabis.
- Eighteen out of 69 (26%) of RMA member municipalities have LUBs that include language for medical cannabis.
- Combined, there are 26 out of 69 (38%) of RMA member municipalities that have either medical or recreational cannabis included in their LUBs.
If your municipality is looking to amend your LUB to address the production or retail sale of cannabis, consider reviewing this document here. To view all other resources on the Planning for Cannabis page, click here.
