On May 5 and 6, 2016, the AAMDC and AUMA jointly hosted delegates from the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities for the 2016 Western Canadian Municipalities Association (WCMA) annual meeting. The WCMA provides an opportunity for the municipal associations from the three Prairie Provinces to gather and discuss significant policy issues.
This year’s WCMA agenda was packed with nineteen issues of importance to both urban and rural municipalities in the three provinces, such as disaster relief funding, broadband internet, climate change, recycling agriculture plastics, farm safety, drones and unmanned vehicles, and the Energy East pipeline, among others. While some items were simply discussed, others produced direction for the associations to take joint advocacy action, particularly on topics such as rail safety, rail capacity, municipal jurisdiction over drones, and aquatic invasive species.
The AAMDC values the opportunity to understand challenges and strategies used by other municipal associations in the WCMA, and looks forward to continuing to strengthen these collaborative relationships.
