Summary

The County of St. Paul is looking for a part-time Transfer Station Attendant. This is a safety-sensitive position, working to operate, maintain, and improve the County transfer stations and landfills. This role will be primarily based at the Whitney Lake Transfer Station, managing the proper disposal of solid waste streams and recycling at the site.

Director, Community Services / Agriculture & Waste Supervisor

Working hours

12-18 hours per week, 6- to 8-hour daytime shifts. Weekend work is required.

Compensation

Starting rate of $22.88 per hour, with flexibility to negotiate based on skills, qualifications, and experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the enforcement of County transfer station and landfill rules and regulations.
  • Performing daily site inspections, keeping the bin sites, operator office, and gates clear, while reporting irregularities, damages, or break-ins.
  • Interacting with site users to collect user fees in accordance with the County’s fee schedule bylaw, prevent disposal of unacceptable waste, directing acceptable waste and recyclables to designated locations, and providing information on County practices.
  • Monitoring bin sites, recyclables, dry waste pits, or burn pits to determine when they require servicing, compaction, or clean up.
  • Ensuring hazardous/environmental waste and recyclables are segregated properly and disposed of in accordance with County procedures and/or provincial regulations.
  • Completing required administrative paperwork (e.g. traffic counts, inventory lists) and maintaining records related to contractors and service providers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Ability to safely unload and sort material, including moving materials up to 50 lbs/23 kgs.
  • Willingness and ability to reliably commute to the Whitney Lake Transfer Station, with the occasional shift at another County site as needed.
  • Strong English verbal communication skills that allow for clear communication and information exchange.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a Transfer Stations Basics certificate, a Landfills Basics certificate, and a Handling of Household Hazards Waste certificate.
  • Experience and/or training operating a skid steer is preferred.
