Summary

This position provides technical field support to the Transportation Services Department with administration of program planning, program reporting, data entry, and contract monitoring. In addition, is responsible for the inspection of gravel surfaces, the research required for gravel projects, and gravel monitoring compliance initiatives.

This position is safety sensitive.

Key Responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Transportation’s Road Maintenance Programs (40%)

  • Conducts research and compiles information for job requirement on Graveling projects.
  • Completes contract administration such as assisting with providing information relating to current contracts.
  • Monitors tendered contracts to support road maintenance programs (Gravelling).
  • Tracks and manages inventory of materials (gravel, sand, cutting edges, safety supplies, tools, rock chips, cold mix, culverts etc.).
  • Consolidates road gravelling requirement information obtained from the Transportation Supervisors.
  • Prepares detailed daily reports.

Inspect, Monitor and Assess (15%)

  • Conducts road inspections on all roads scheduled for gravel.

Coordinate Field Level Gravel Haul  (30%)

  • Coordinates execution at the field level for graveling for Dust Control, Construction and Shoulder Pulling Programs.
  • Coordinates at the field level, gravel hauling with contractors or own forces under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Coordinates material, human resources, and equipment resources to support Transportation programs as well as contracted services.

Other Related Duties (15%)

  • Other duties as directed by Transportation Supervisor.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
  • Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures, and processes, as well as aligns work to the Sturgeon County values.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Must have a good foundational knowledge of:
    • how to calculate out gravel spread,
    • road maintenance programs,
    • aggregate sieve analysis and testing procedures as well as loader and truck efficiencies, and
    • Knowledge on tons vs cubic yard calculations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
  • Ability to take initiative, be independent, resourceful, work well and effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in an organized manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally verbally and in writing, including being adaptable, receptive, timely, and in a calm and friendly manner when communicating with others.
  • Strong public relation problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare detailed written reports on road maintenance programs supported.
  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience in similar role, including working with gravel roads.

Assets:

  • Related education in environmental sciences or a civil engineering technology may be an asset.
  • A current Standard First Aid Certificate is an asset.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS

  • This position works in an office or office-like environment and within a mobile office in a County provided vehicle.
  • The working environment is deadline driven and involves multitasking and managing priorities.
  • The position will require to work overtime (up to 12-hour days) during peak times; advance notice will be provided.
  • This position works both indoors, with limited physical requirements of walking, bending, standing, or reaching, as well as in a mobile office in a vehicle, exposed to varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • There is an occasional requirement to drive a vehicle and lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds (24 kilograms).
  • This position may have longer periods of time sitting/standing at a desk with visual concentration, or in a vehicle sitting, but the position has control over when to take breaks.
