Summary

Position Summary

The County of Wetaskiwin is seeking a Parks & Recreation Supervisor, reporting to the Director of Leisure & Community Services. The Parks & Recreation Supervisor is responsible for coordination and oversight of the day-to-day operations and maintenance of parks, arena, campgrounds and related facilities. This position will provide hands on leadership, direction and innovation in the Leisure & Community Services division supporting recreation activities for residents across the County of Wetaskiwin.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible to:

  • Act as a working Supervisor, participating directly in parks, arena, and maintenance activities;
  • Ensure service levels and maintenance standards established by management are met;
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Leisure & Community Services to develop annual, seasonal, and long-term operational and capital work plans;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Leisure & Community Services to develop annual operating and capital plans, establish project priorities, prepare budgets;
  • Provide regular updates on operational and capital plans, including weekly progress reporting;
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules and efficient practices for parks and campground operations;
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedule for refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and plumbing systems while managing associated budgets, contractors and capital replacement planning;
  • Maintain accurate operational records, inspection reports, and logs;
  • Provide training, guidance, and leadership to departmental personnel;
  • Prepare work schedules, staffing plans, and assign staff priorities, and performance expectations;
  • Oversee hiring, orientation, training, performance appraisals, discipline, and termination, as required;
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for the operation and maintenance of arena refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, and building automation systems, ensuring optimal performance and regulatory compliance;
  • Coordinate ice installation and monitor ice quality, refrigeration performance, energy consumption, and building climate control systems; troubleshoot mechanical issues and coordinate preventative maintenance programs to maximize equipment life and minimize downtime;
  • Support future recreational priorities, including but not limited to winter and summer recreational opportunities such as outdoor skating rinks, skating trails, cross-country ski trails, hiking trails, campground enhancements and day-use area improvements;

Requirements

Experience 

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressive experience in parks, arenas, recreation, or facilities operations, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
  • Experience with asset maintenance, lifecycle planning, and capital project coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple facility types such as arenas, campgrounds, parks, trails, and water access sites.
  • Refrigeration & HVAC Certification is an asset.
  • Experience working within a municipal or public-sector environment, including understanding of governance, Council priorities, and public accountability.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

Education

  • Arena Level 1 and 2 Certification is a requirement.
  • Diploma or degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Facility Management, Trade Diploma, Business Administration, Trade related Field.

The County of Wetaskiwin offers a competitive municipal compensation package for our Parks & Recreation Supervisor position including:

  • Full time, permanent position based on a 40-hour work week, schedule is determined to accommodate facility requirements.
  • Annual Salary Range: $65,560 – 80,636. Qualifications and experience are used for grid placement.
