Summary

Sturgeon County is hiring up to five (5) temporary full-time Mower Operators for approximately 18 weeks (May 19 – September 18, 2026). This position operates equipment to control grass and weeds on municipal land and road allowances.

This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites.

Hours of work are Monday to Thursday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm (10 hour days).

Key Responsibilities

Mowing and Herbicide Application Operations (90%)

  • Operates a 150-horsepower tractor and a 15-foot rotary cutter with or without an extension (sidearm) unit with herbicide application technology to mow grass and control weeds on municipal road allowances, and park reserves.
  • May be required to operate unit with an extension arm (side arm).
  • Applies herbicides in accordance with all applicable legislation.
  • Performs other vegetation management and landscape maintenance duties when weather is unsuitable for mowing including mechanical weed and grass trimming, weed hand pulling, landscaping maintenance, and grass seeding.
  • Records details of work performed, including materials used, equipment maintenance activities, weather conditions, and locations.
  • Cleans and maintains all related equipment and assist with servicing and repairs.

Other Related Duties (10%)

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
  • Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures, and processes, as well as align work to the Sturgeon County values.

Requirements

Required:

  • Experience in lawn care and property maintenance.
  • Experience with herbicide application.
  • Experience with  cargo securement.
  • Experience operating a truck on gravel roadsides.
  • Mechanical knowledge and aptitude to repair and maintain tractors and other implements.
  • Knowledge of GIS-based system to collect and maintain geospatial data relevant to department operations.
  • Identify noxious and prohibited noxious weed species.
  • Knowledge of pesticide application process.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) System.
  • Current Industrial Pesticide Applicator certification or Authorized Assistant certification (or the ability to obtain).
  • Ability to correctly wear Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) in compliance with Sturgeon County’s RPE Code of Practice
  • National Safety Code Cargo Securement Knowledge Certification or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Orientation or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Pre-Trip & Cargo Securement Orientation & Evaluation or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Pre-Trip Knowledge or the ability to obtain.
  • WHMIS 2015 or ability to obtain.
  • Minimum Emergency First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Defensive Driving course certificate, or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and politely verbally with others.
  • Problem-solving skills to address day-to-day issues that may arise.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare written reports.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of pesticide application processes.
  • Experience with GIS-based system to collect and maintain geospatial data relevant to department operations.
