Summary

The County of Wetaskiwin is seeking a Legislative Clerk, reporting to the Assistant CAO and will provide administrative support to the County, including Bylaw Management, Petitions, along with research and development of special projects, and select strategic initiatives. The Legislative Clerk will also be appointed Privacy Coordinator and act as Clerk to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB) and Assessment Review Board (ARB) for the County. You will be dependable, trustworthy, honest, empathetic, and punctual with a high degree of personal initiative and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Participate in the interpretation of relevant Municipal or Provincial Policy and regulations and the formulation of the County’s response to changes in legislation.
  • Monitor and review legislative / regulatory changes and ensure they are conveyed to the appropriate County Departments for review and information.
  • Research and carry out special projects, studies, and reports as assigned.
  • Provide back up support to the Executive Assistant for meetings, Council Presentations, Requests for Decision, attending meetings, and transcribing minutes.
  • Act as Clerk to the Subdivision & Development Appeal Board and Assessment Review Board.
  • Administration of meetings – prepare agendas, attend meetings, transcribe minutes, and ensure follow up is completed.
  • Assist with preparing, updating, researching, and maintaining Bylaws.
  • Act as Privacy Coordinator with processing requests relative to the Access to Information Act (ATIA) and Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), as well as providing guidance to County Staff related to information and privacy matters.
  • Act as Deputy Returning Officer and assist in the planning of elections.
  • Assist with other duties as allocated.

Requirements

Experience 

  • Five years of municipal government experience or related field.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Considerable working knowledge of the Municipal Government Act, Local Authorities Election Act, Access to Information Act, Protection of Privacy Act, and Robert’s Rules of Order.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with a focus on proof-reading.
  • Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Experience in managing municipal elections.

Education 

  • Post-secondary education in public administration, political science, business, or a related field.
  • A Certificate in Information Access and Protection of Privacy.
  • Current Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB) and Assessment Review Board (ARB) Clerk training.
  • Have or willing to obtain Commissioner for Oaths (internal/external).

  • Full time, permanent position based on a 35-hour standard work week
  • Salary Range: $69,154 – $88,243. Qualifications and experience are used for grid placement.
