The mission of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (“RMA”) is “Strengthening rural Alberta by supporting our members through effective representation and valued services.”. Under the banner of Business Services, there are three longstanding business units: 1) RMA Insurance, incorporated in 1955; 2) RMA Trade, incorporated in 1935; and 3) RMA Fuel, in business since 1996. RMA Insurance has become a trusted foundation for Alberta’s municipalities, private/charter schools, kindergartens, senior housing organizations, and other eligible non-profit community groups.
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will handle assigned litigation matters on behalf of the Genesis Reciprocal Insurance Exchange (“Genesis”). The Legal Counsel will be responsible to the RMA Insurance claims department to offer legal opinions, defend legal actions, assist in claims settlement, and otherwise act in the interests of Genesis and RMA Insurance as required by the management team.

Assist in operation of the insurance litigation program to support Genesis Reciprocal Insurance and RMA Insurance Ltd.
Handle insurance litigation files of varying complexities independently from beginning to conclusion.
Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits and other legal documents to support applications, mediations, judicial settlement conferences and trials.
Independently prepare and conduct applications, discoveries, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trial conferences and trials.
Prepare and present educational legal seminars.
Maintain productive and effective communications with claims department and adjusters.
Assist in the refinement of the Genesis Reciprocal Insurance wordings when required.
Provide such other support and advice as required by the RMA senior management team.
Assist with strategies to enhance the efficiency of the RMA Insurance program as it relates to legal exposures.
Monitor changes in the legal environment which will affect the operations of the RMA Insurance program.
Maintain accurate documentation/information on all claim files assigned.
Ability to handle multiple areas of liability insurance matters, including occupier’s liability, municipal errors and omissions, wrongful dismissal and employment liability, tender law, and bodily injury claims.
Proven expertise in at least two of the above liability insurance areas.
Thorough knowledge of the Alberta Insurance Act and basic knowledge of Municipal Government Act.
Working knowledge of contractual liability.
Ability to run an organized caseload from beginning to end, with little to no supervision.
Strong business acumen with verbal, negotiation, interpersonal and drafting skills.
Excellent client service and communication skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to travel (clean drivers abstract).
Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B. or J.D.)
Member of the Alberta Bar Association in good standing
5 to 7 years of experience in civil litigation and advocacy.
