Key Responsibilities

Athabasca County is currently accepting applications for a permanent, full-time Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our Public Works team. Under the direction of the Shop Foreman, the Heavy Duty Mechanic performs skilled Journeyman level repair and maintenance to a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, as used in County operations.

The ideal candidate will be a reliable and motivated individual with previous experience repairing comparable heavy equipment with a strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Performs regular repairs and maintenance on all types of heavy equipment/trucks of which may include motor graders, snow/sander trucks, gravel trucks, picker trucks, light trucks, dozers, lowbed trucks, tractors, track hoes, rubber-tired hoes, front-end loaders, bobcats, rotary mowers, steamers, compactors, etc.
  2. Responds to service calls in the field and conducts emergency repairs as required.
  3. Prepares repair estimates as required.
  4. Completes work order forms and records all inventory items removed from the parts room following appropriate internal procedures.
  5. Reports any damages or malfunctions of equipment or trucks to their supervisor.
  6. Maintains clean and safe working areas.
  7. Contributes to a safe working environment by following all safe work practices in accordance with legislation and County policies and procedures; ensures all tools and equipment are in safe working condition.
  8. Other duties as required.

Requirements

Key Qualifications & Skills:

  • Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic certification.
  • CVIP license.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment relating to mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work overtime, evenings, and weekends.
  • Capable of working in a physically demanding multi-tasking work environment.
  • Must supply their own tools.
