Summary

The County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 is seeking one (1) permanent full-time Grader / Patrol Operator to join the Public Works Operations team. Reporting to the Road Maintenance Foreman, this position is responsible for the year-round maintenance of an assigned grader patrol area, including gravel road maintenance and winter operations, based out of the Alder Flats and Winfield Shop as required.

Additional duties include supporting Public Works operations, physical labour, and equipment care and maintenance. The current area of operations will be primarily in the west end of the County; however, support in other areas of the County may be required. Work hours typically fall between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with a 1/2-hour unpaid lunch. Hours may vary as operationally required and in accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 (IUOE) Collective Agreement.

Key Responsibilities

Operate a motor grader to maintain gravel roads, including blading, shaping, crowning, gravel recovery and maintaining proper drainage.
Perform winter road maintenance, including snowplowing, snow removal and related winter operations.
Independently assess road conditions and prioritize work within the assigned grader patrol area in accordance with County service levels and operational priorities.
Identify and report road, drainage, washout, surface and maintenance concerns to the Road Maintenance Foreman.
Coordinate grader activities with gravel hauling, road maintenance, construction and other Public Works operations.
Complete daily equipment inspections and promptly identify and report mechanical or maintenance concerns.
A proven competency of demonstrated motor grader operating experience is required, with significant experience maintaining gravel roads.
Demonstrated knowledge of gravel road maintenance principles, including crown development, slopes and grades, drainage, gravel recovery, washboarding and surface shaping.
A general background in heavy equipment operation, equipment care and maintenance is required.
Must have the physical capability to change and rotate grader blades, install or remove grader attachments without assistance, and perform physical labour, including hand brushing with a chainsaw where required.
Able to work independently and as part of a team, exercise sound operational judgment, and respond to changing road and weather conditions.
Able to work extended or modified hours as required, including during winter storms, spring breakup and other operational events, and possess effective communication skills.

Requirements

Qualifications

A minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
Possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s Licence, with Class 3 preferred, and be able to provide a clean driver’s abstract.
First Aid & CPR Certificate.
Heavy equipment operator training, roadbuilding experience and construction-related safety training are considered assets.

Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete a practical motor grader operating assessment as part of the selection process.
