Athabasca County is currently accepting applications for a permanent, full-time Grader Operator to join our Public Works team. Under the direction of the Public Works Maintenance Foreman, the Grader Operator performs skilled work within a designated area in the summer and winter operation of motor graders in the maintenance of roads, right-of-ways, and upon County lands.

The ideal candidate will be a reliable and motivated individual with previous experience in operating heavy equipment with a strong commitment to safety and teamwork. Equipment pick up and drop off for this area is located at the Village of Boyle, Public Works Shop.

Key Responsibilities

1. Maintain roads and transportation systems in order to ensure safe roadways within the County, reporting any unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of grades and interpret roadway plans and maps.
3. Operate all equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
4. Perform daily safety and maintenance checks, pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
5. While grading, note any culverts in the spring and fall to ensure no damage or obstructions are in place.
6. Maintain and submit daily time sheets and equipment tracking form as well as maps, and logs of roads graded for supervisor’s approval on a regular basis.
7. Report all damaged or missing roadway signage to PW Maintenance Foreman.
8. Maintain a daily record of fuel, blades, types of blades, removed from (or replaced into) the Public Works yard and submit to Supervisor/Job Costing Clerk immediately.
9. Maintain courteous and professional interactions with the public, other contractors, Council members, and other co-workers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Experience operating heavy equipment in a safe and responsible manner
• Valid Class 5 Operators License with clean abstract
• Reliability, strong work ethic, and self motivation are key assets
• Knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety programs with proven record of compliance
• Knowledge of Athabasca County considered an asset
