Engineering Student - Transportation and Engineering Services Department

The Engineering Student will assist the Transportation and Engineering Department with initiatives, programs, research, reporting, and data entry.

Key Responsibilities Include:

There are three positions each with a different focus:

Position 1: will assist the department initiatives and programs by research, reporting, and data entry with a focus on Traffic Monitoring Program to support the asset management road count strategy

Conduct traffic counts and turning movement studies to support the County’s road programs and future asset management road count strategy and data entry.

Assist with road and drainage surveys using GPS equipment as required.

Conduct inspections and reports to support Capital programs and projects.

Complete special projects and tasks as required.

Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Position 2: will assist the department initiatives and programs by research, reporting, and data entry with a primary focus on drainage infrastructure and subdivisions and a secondary focus on gravel and paved roads.

Conduct inspections and reports to support Transportation Programs such as drainage infrastructure and subdivisions, gravel roads and paved roads.

Conduct asset condition assessments.

Assist the Transportation Supervisors with formal site inspections.

Complete special projects and tasks as required.

Input data into the GIS system.

Assist with road and drainage surveys.

Assist Transportation and Engineering staff as required.

Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Position 3: will assist the department initiatives and programs by field data collection, resident engagement, reporting, and data entry with a primary focus on drainage infrastructure and subdivisions.

Assist with drainage easement surveys.

Interact with the public for conducting easement inspections.

Conduct inspections and reports to support Transportation Programs such as drainage infrastructure and subdivisions.

Aid in the preparation of project documents.

Aid in providing project status reporting.

Assist Transportation and Engineering staff as required.

Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Requirements:

Job Skills and Qualifications

Valid class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable 5-year commercial driver’s abstract.

Ability to operate a pickup truck on gravel roads and navigate the rural road system considered a strong asset.

Ability to understand survey principles and operate basic survey equipment.

Required to interact with County employees, citizens, contractors in an appropriate manner as guided by Sturgeon County Values.

Completed or active post-secondary education in Civil or Municipal Engineering or another related field considered an asset.

Ability to accurately read as-built drawings, and preferably understand municipal roadways.

Experience using GIS .

Experience using AutoCAD.

Defensive Driving course certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.

Minimum Emergency First Aid certificate.

Work is typically performed in the field, remotely and in an office environment.

The incumbent should have excellent organizational and communication skills, ability to deal with applicants to address concerns, negotiate and keep confidential information, familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. Work well in a team setting or independently.

Additional Job Information:

Salary Range: $20.78-$24.30 per hour
