Summary

The County of Stettler and Heartland Regional Fire have an exciting and unique career opportunity for an experienced firefighter who will bring inspiring, positive and organized leadership to the position of Deputy Fire Chief with opportunities for career growth in the future. This position will have an exciting opportunity to help develop and expand Heartland Regional Fire as an organization, which transitioned into its new chapter in 2026, of providing emergency services for the County of Stettler, Villages of Big Valley and Donalda and Summer Villages of Rochon Sands and White Sands.

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for, in conjunction with the Fire Chief and Regional Manager, the management and leading of aspects of the regional fire department’s rural operations, training, investigations, inspections, and public education. Heartland Regional Fire consists of four stations: Stettler, Big Valley, Donalda, and Byemoor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coordinates, and supports the Heartland Regional Stations and Platoon Chiefs
  • Working with the Fire Chief and Manager of Regional Fire Services, directs, trains, and inspires volunteer firefighters
  • Participates in an on-call rotation to respond to fire incidents within the response area as required
  • Establishes, models, supports and encourages a collaborative and healthy work environment including personal accountability, a unified culture, team alignment, engaged employees, respectful conduct, employee and volunteer recognition and continuous improvement
  • Assists with oversight to the maintenance of County apparatus and equipment
  • Participates in the County of Stettler’s management teams
  • Assists the Fire Chief and Regional Manager in the development of the regional fire department’s business plan, budget, and human resources planning to complement the municipality’s strategic plan
  • Liaises with and fosters positive relations with regional partners, municipal neighbors, industry, mutual aid partners, and the public
  • Understands legislative and regulatory requirements and assists the regional fire department to meet the requirements outlined in such acts including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, the Safety Codes Act, and the Municipal Government Act
  • Participates in and upholds safety programs ensuring Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines are followed for the safety of members
  • Ensures a positive image is portrayed to the public indicating our municipalities and department commitment to responsible public service
  • Reports to and updates supervisors regularly on all activities

Requirements

An ideal candidate would possess the following preferred qualifications and skills:

  • NFPA Certifications including: 1001 (Firefighting), 1006 (Technical Rescue), 1031 (Inspector), 1033 (Investigator), 1041 (Instructor) and 1051 (Wildland)

Additional certifications would be considered an asset.

  • ICS 300
  • Valid Class 1, 2, or 3 Alberta Driver’s License with air brake endorsement
  • Standard First Aid
    Equivalencies will be considered.
