Key Responsibilities Include:
Ensures that private and public lands within Sturgeon County are in compliance with the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act and County Weed and Grass Control Bylaw.
Monitor public and private properties to ensure compliance with the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act and Sturgeon County Weed and Grass Control Bylaw.
Communicate weed and pest issues to landowners and stakeholders.
Assist landowners with developing weed and pest management plans.
Maintain detailed records of all work activities, including interactions with landowners.
Prepare correspondences and reports and Investigate complaints.
Assist landowners with the identification of horticultural, crop insects and diseases.
Perform monitoring activities on insects and diseases including, but not limited to: Grasshopper, Bertha Armyworm, Elm Bark Beetle, Clubroot, and Fusarium Head Blight.
Perform vegetation management activities such as: herbicide application, mechanical weed control, and handpicking.
Perform other related duties as required.
Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
Requirements:
Completion of some post-secondary studies in agriculture, environmental sciences or a related field.
A current Industrial Pesticide Applicator certification or Authorized Assistant certification (or the ability to obtain).
Knowledge of pesticides, agronomic practices, and an agricultural background would be an asset.
Ability to identify noxious and prohibited noxious weed species, and common agricultural pests.
Ability to wear a half mask with organic carbon filters when handling herbicides, and completion of a Respiratory User Screening Form as per CSA Z94.4-11.
Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
Familiarity with the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) System.
Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare written reports.
Strong research and problem-solving skills.
Valid class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable 5-year driver’s abstract.
NOTE
Applicants must submit at time of application a 5-year Commercial Drivers Abstract dated within 30 days of application.
Internal driver evaluations will be conducted prior to hire.
