Rate of Pay: $26.48
End date: Up to 16 weeks, ending August 31, 2026
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am- 4:30 pm

Sturgeon County is seeking a motivated summer student to gain hands-on experience in Treasury, Financial Planning, and Financial Reporting. This role is designed to provide meaningful public-sector financial experience, practical skill development, and exposure to municipal finance processes. 

This position is partly funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Grant to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are Canadian Citizens.  If you’re self-motivated, open to new challenges, enjoy working within a team environment, we encourage you to apply!  

Key Responsibilities

Treasury

  • Perform basic data entry and validation in financial systems and spreadsheets.
  • Assist with processing applications for the Clean Energy Improvement Program.
  • Support treasury related reconciliations by assisting with the review, organization, and validation of financial records.

Financial Planning

  • Carry out basic financial analysis (trend analysis, comparisons, ratio summaries)
  • Assist with process reviews and documenting budget development procedures.
  • Update and maintain budget working papers and templates.
  • Assist with data collection and validation for operating and capital budgets.
  • Perform research and organize information for financial plans and long-range forecasts.

Financial Reporting

  • Assist with the preparation and processing of journal entries for financial reporting purposes.
  • Support monthly and quarterly financial reporting by compiling schedules and reconciliations.
  • Help ensure financial data is accurate and complete through basic checks and peer review.
  • Organize and maintain financial reporting files in accordance with records management standards.

Other Duties

  • Support and coordinate special projects as required.
  • Assist with the annual taxation process.
  • Provide coverage for and/or assist with financial operations staff responsibilities at times.
  • Assist with preparing and balancing bank deposits as required.
  • Assist the department with the County’s Records and Information Management Program through the maintenance, control, and disposition of the records.
  • Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System return.

Requirements

Job Qualifications and Skills

  • Priority will be given to those who are currently enrolled fulltime in an Accounting or Business Administration program at a recognized post-secondary educational institution and intend on returning to the same program in the upcoming fall term.
  • Ability to provide exceptional internal and external customer service in a consistent and professional manner.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working both independently and in group settings.
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office products and accounting software.
