RMA Seeking Nominees to Participate on Safety Codes Council Fire Sub-Council 

RMA’s position on the sub-council has recently become vacant 

The Safety Codes Council (SCC) is a statutory corporation that oversees the development and administration of safety standards throughout the province. The Board of Directors of the Safety Codes Council (the Council) is seeking nominations from RMA to fill the Municipal Districts and Counties representative space on the Fire Sub-council. 

The Council is an independent regulatory organization with a legislative mandate to support the implementation of the Minister of Municipal Affairs’ policy direction for Alberta’s safety codes system including: 

  • Developing and recommending to the Minister, safety codes and standards; 
  • Promoting harmonization of safety standards and practices; 
  • Certifying and designating safety codes officers; 
  • Accrediting municipalities corporations and agencies to deliver safety code services, 
  • Administering the appeals of orders, certifications, and variance refusals issued under the Safety Codes Act; and 
  • Overseeing the delivery of permits and inspections for Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province through the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA), including performing all compliance monitoring services for storage tank systems. 

RMA serves as a nominating organization for one position on the SCC’s Fire Sub-Council. The Fire Sub-Council focuses on adopting codes that help to minimize and prevent fires. 

The detailed competencies required to serve effectively on the Fire Sub-Council are available in the member description. Additionally, the specific RMA representative on the committee must meet the following qualifications

  • Works in a rural municipality (required) 
  • Recognized experience in the fire industry and / or as a fire safety codes officer (required) 
  • Familiar with the Fire Code and Building Code (current editions) in all aspects (required) 
  • Familiar with the Safety Codes Act and its authority (required) 

Anyone who meets the competencies and qualifications requirements is encouraged to apply. Applications must consist of a brief resume or profile that outlines the applicant’s alignment with the competencies and qualifications, as well as the applicant’s contact information.
