Three positions on the RMA Board of Directors are up for election at the 2026 Fall Convention
The RMA 2026 Fall Convention will take place November 3-5, 2026, with the following positions on the Board of Directors up for election:
- President
- District 1 Director
- District 4 Director
All positions are for a two-year term (2026-2028). A current board member that is mid-term (i.e., one (1) year into a two (2) year term) can submit a nomination package for the position of President without resigning from their board director position. Should this occur, members of the district of the board member who has submitted a nomination package will be informed and an updated nomination package and nomination deadlines will be published.
RMA Board Elections Policy and Procedures
The RMA Board Elections Policy guides the nominations and elections process for all Board positions. Complete eligibility requirements for members of the RMA Board of Directors are outlined in Section E of the RMA Bylaws, including the requirement that candidates be duly elected officials of an RMA full member municipality. For District Director positions, candidates must represent a municipality located within the district being contested.
Members interested in serving on the RMA Board of Directors are encouraged to review the 2026 Board of Directors Elections Information Package for detailed information on Board roles and responsibilities, eligibility requirements, time commitments, and governance policies. The package also outlines the important role Board members play in governing RMA and its subsidiaries, setting strategic direction, representing rural municipal interests, and advocating on behalf of Alberta’s rural municipalities.
Potential candidates are strongly encouraged to speak with a current Board member, CEO and Executive Director, Duane Gladden, or Chief Relations Officer, Tasha Blumenthal to gain a full understanding of the responsibilities and commitment associated with Board service.
Nomination Information
As outlined in the RMA Board Elections Policy, candidates may submit nomination papers for both the position of President and the available District Director position representing their municipality. In this case, separate nomination packages are required for each position. If a candidate is elected President, their nomination for District Director will be rescinded.
Current Board members who are mid-term may also submit a nomination package for President without resigning their current Board position. If successful, an election will be held to fill the resulting vacancy for the remainder of the term.
Nomination packages must be endorsed by at least two elected representatives of RMA full member municipalities in good standing. Candidates may self-nominate, and electronic signatures are accepted.
In accordance with the Board Elections Policy, there are separate nomination deadlines for the positions of President and District Director.
For the 2026 elections, the nomination deadlines are:
- President: Monday, October 5, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
- District 1 Director and District 4 Director: Monday, October 19, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
A list of candidates will be shared with members following each nomination deadline, and a final list of all candidates will be posted on the RMA website after October 19, 2026.
As per the Board Elections Policy, if no nominations are received for a position prior to the nomination deadline, nominations from the floor will be accepted at the 2026 Fall Convention.
All completed nomination packages must be submitted electronically to the RMA Returning Officer, Todd Brand, at toddbrand@hotmail.com by the applicable deadline.
