The Government of Alberta has officially launched regulations regarding online gaming in the province.
Alberta’s new regulated iGaming market launched on July 13, 2026, with 22 registered sites. This is intended to provide a safer alternative to unregulated online gambling, where an estimated 70% of online gaming activity previously occurred. 2% of gross gaming revenue will be allocated to First Nations initiatives and 1% will support social responsibility programs such as education, research, and treatment.
In Spring 2025, RMA released More Work for Less Money, a report that outlines how the charitable gaming model is a losing bet for rural municipalities. One of the recommendations of this report was for the GOA to use online gaming funds to equalize rural/urban casino revenue disparities. While RMA acknowledges that devoting a percentage of revenues to Indigneous initiatives and social responsibility programs is beneficial, it does ignore the opportunity to reduce or eliminate the revenue gaps faced by rural charitable organizations.
RMA will continue advocacy on this issue and will inform members of any relevant information.
