Resolutions play an important role in guiding RMA’s advocacy approach and position development. As part of RMA’s commitment to consistent member reporting on resolution advocacy, RMA is proud to provide continued updates through the Resolution Report Series.
Each report in this series offers a brief, accessible snapshot of an endorsed resolution – its context, its impact on rural municipalities, and RMA’s positions on potential solutions. The series highlights why each resolution matters, including concerns identified, the issues evaluated, and the advocacy efforts advancing solutions.
Resolution 2-26S: Changes to Provincial Bridge and Culvert Classification identifies two priorities: (1) modernizing the definition of culvert to be more conducive to economic concerns; and (2) collaborating with the Government of Alberta to investigate cost-effective bridge maintenance and replacement strategies.
This Report outlines both components and provides an update on the direction RMA is taking to advance them. This includes an examination of the regulatory framework that municipalities must navigate when building or replacing bridges and culverts, and how a constructive relationship with Government of Alberta ministries can support these responsibilities in a fiscally responsible manner during an increasingly costly infrastructure challenge.
