Summary

The County of Stettler No. 6 is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to fill the position of Manager of Shop and Fleet within the Operations Department. This working-level management position is responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance, inspection, and lifecycle planning of County vehicles, heavy equipment, and fleet assets.

This position plays a key role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient municipal operations through effective shop supervision, preventative maintenance planning, staff leadership, budgeting support, and hands-on mechanical work. The successful candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, organizational ability, and a commitment to workplace health and safety.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily repair and fleet maintenance activities and equipment. Our fleet includes County, Stettler District Ambulance, Heartland Regional Fire, Shirley McClellan Regional Water Services Commission and Stettler Waste Management.
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor preventative maintenance programs and inspections.
  • Supervise assigned shop staff, including apprentice mechanics where applicable.
  • Participate employee performance reviews and support employee development.
  • Ensure compliance with County safety policies, safe work procedures, and applicable legislation.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, reporting, and documentation.
  • Diagnose, repair, overhaul, and maintain light-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, and industrial machinery.
  • Interpret work orders, technical manuals, and manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Support positive working relationships with County staff, Council, contractors, and the public.
  • Provide operational coverage during staff absences, vacations, or peak operational periods.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Participate in on-call service requirements as needed.
  • Provide recommendations to support environmental and operational performance improvements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

  • Valid Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Journeyman Certificate.
  • Valid Automotive Service Technician (AST) Journeyman Certificate.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 1 or 3 considered an asset).
  • Strong knowledge of heavy equipment, fleet maintenance practices, diagnostics, and repair procedures.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Familiarity with municipal operations and fleet management practices is considered an asset.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 23 kilograms (50 lbs).
  • Work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7: 30 AM – 4:30 PM. Willingness to participate in on-call duties and after-hours work when required.
