Summary:
The Senior Utilities Operator is responsible for performing skilled operations, maintenance, inspections and monitoring of the municipal water and wastewater systems, sampling, data collection, data entry, and preparation of supporting documentation. Other duties include assisting with the development, implementation, and assisting with capital projects and performing basic building maintenance.

Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Flexibility required.

Starting at $92,589

Key Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

Water & Wastewater Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the water treatment facility, water distribution systems, wastewater treatment facility and wastewater collection systems through tasks including but not limited to:
    • Conduct regular inspections, identify problem areas, and carry out the necessary actions.
    • Follow the preventative maintenance schedule for all systems.
    • Conduct regular sampling and analyze results in accordance with the operating license for all systems.
    • Flush all water distribution systems, maintain Hydrants, Valves and other components.
    • Conduct any necessary wastewater flushing.
    • Ensure cleaning of all lift stations is carried out.
    • Collect necessary data from all systems and analyze for compliance.
    • Maintain SCADA and Emergency call out systems.
    • Maintain and update all safety and emergency response plans as needed.
    • Witness and inspect water and wastewater service connections as needed.
    • Keep an inventory of water meters and associated equipment.
    • Install water meters as necessary.
    • Read all water meters as directed.
  • Participate in the Department on call system.

MD Facility Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Conduct general building improvements at the Administration Building as directed by the Public Works Supervisor.
  • Provide basic facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs conducting or ensuring inspections are conducted on the following fire extinguishers, Gas monitoring equipment and heating systems.
  • Maintain and repair Utilities Department and Administration Department vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Solid Waste Responsibilities:

  • Conduct spring and fall brush clean-ups in hamlets.
  • Assist the Solid Waste Operator with removal and disposal of sundry items around bins.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Perform as the Public Works Supervisor in the absence of the Public Works Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate leadership and mentoring to Department colleagues.
  • Train for and perform the functions of a designated role in the MD’s Emergency Plan as assigned by the Director of Protective & Community Services.
  • Perform all duties as outlined in the East Exshaw Emergency plan.
  • Actively participate in the MD’s Health and Safety program.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the Public Works Supervisor.
  • Assist the Public Works Supervisor with any capital project reviews.
  • Assist the Public Works Supervisor with annual budget preparations.
  • Assist all other departments as directed.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma (GED)
  • Valid Alberta Operators (Drivers) Class 3 with “Q” endorsement.
  • Minimum Level 1 water treatment, Level 1 water distribution, Level 1 wastewater collection and Level 2 wastewater treatment certification or willingness to obtain as soon as possible.
  • Poses some supervisory or lead-hand experience and demonstrates strong leadership skills.
  • WHMIS knowledge and First aid certificate.
  • General knowledge of building construction and equipment; field experience or a trade required. Post-secondary education in construction, water, or wastewater preferred.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and perform duties in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Skilled knowledge of machinery, large equipment, and the repair and maintenance of it.
  • General knowledge of OH&S, confined space and work alone training.
  • Possess physical strength and agility sufficient for lifting objects up to 23kgs (50 lbs).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work often in adverse conditions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiar with the use of computer programs such as Microsoft outlook, word, excel etc.
  • Willingness to obtain any other related training.
  • Able to work overtime and on-call.
