The Mental Health Capacity Builder (MHCB) supports children, youth, families, and community partners to promote positive mental health and strengthen social-emotional skills through awareness, education, and skill-building. Working collaboratively with schools, the MHCB facilitates evidence-based programs that enhance mental health literacy and student resilience and provides resources for parents/caregivers to reinforce learning at home. As part of the Children and Family Well-being team, this role contributes to Recovery Alberta’s province-wide, community-based initiative focused on improving mental well-being across communities in Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build upon the strengths and capacity in children and youth, school staff, parents/caregivers and community partners to support positive mental health (social skills, self-confidence, peer relationships, emotional management and personal development), social emotional learning and healthy relationships in children and youth
  • Provide information and help facilitate access to resources and services
  • Ensure quality programming and services through regular supervision and completing administration work while adhering to Strathcona County and the program standards and guidelines
  • Work alongside colleagues in programming, projects and committee work to planning, development, implementation and evaluation
  • Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of programs

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • University Degree in Social Science (Human Ecology, Psychology, Sociology, etc.) plus 3 years related experience; Diploma in Social Science plus 5 years experience may be considered
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience using a capacity building approach working with children, youth and adults including coaching, mentoring and training
  • Excellent working knowledge of positive mental health, social emotional development, and healthy relationships
  • Strong relationship building, community collaboration/networking and time management skills
  • Excellent organization, coordination, and analysis skills with the ability to adapt, multi-task and manage workload between preparing and facilitating programs and other learning opportunities in multiple locations, completing administrative responsibilities, and travelling
  • Ability to take initiative with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills within a team environment
  • Strong facilitation skills, along with excellent verbal and written communication, and an openness to others’ ideas; facilitating programs in classroom settings is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to gather information and apply critical thinking within a changing environment
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Solid comprehension and practice of personal and professional boundaries
  • Must be able to travel to various urban and rural locations throughout Strathcona County and surrounding area

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 on the start date of the job
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person that has been officially granted refugee status in Canada (international students and other temporary residents of Canada are not eligible)
  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Currently possess or ability to acquire First Aid certification
  • Reliable personal transportation is required – mileage for work use will be reimbursed in accordance with Strathcona County vehicle allowance policies
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including daytime, evenings and weekends
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties including lifting up to 30lbs.
