The opportunity

Leduc County is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Utilities Technician to join our team. Reporting to the Manager – Utilities, this exciting opportunity is accountable for the delivery of water and wastewater programs within the County. Through effectively managing priorities, the technician is a key contributor to the achievement of the department’s operational deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

What you will do

  • Contributes to the delivery of the department’s operational plan and utility programs by performing work and adhering to technical and municipal standards.
    • Works with the Supervisor – Utilities to deliver operational activities.
    • Prioritizes work in a changeable environment.
    • Contributes to the execution of municipal utilities maintenance plans.
  • Contributes to the delivery of the following programs:
    • Water quality program
      • Monitors the biological, chemical and physical requirements of the program and takes appropriate action to maintain service level standards.
      • Contributes to the quality assurance/quality control of the systems and emergency responses.
      • Provides service level reports to the Supervisor – Utilities.
    • Hydrant program
  • Monitors the condition of hydrants and the surrounding area and takes appropriate action to maintain service level standards.
  • Contributes to the quality assurance/quality control of the systems and emergency responses.
      • Provides service level reports to the Supervisor – Utilities.
    • Wastewater program
      • Monitors the condition of the lift station wet wells and takes appropriate action to maintain service level standards.
      • Contributes to the quality assurance/quality control of the systems and emergency responses.
      • Provides service level reports to the Supervisor – Utilities.
    • SCADA monitoring program
      • Provides oversight of the remote SCADA monitoring program and takes appropriate action to maintain service level standards.
      • Contributes to the quality assurance/quality control of the systems and emergency responses.
      • Provides service level reports to the Supervisor – Utilities.
  • Supports the Supervisor – Utilities in the implementation of projects and day-to-day work assignments to meet service area deliverables.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
  • Communicates key stakeholder inquiries to the Supervisor – Utilities.
  • Contributes and completes projects that fall within the work group’s functions.
  • Monitors contracted services as assigned by the Supervisor – Utilities.
  • Strives to continually enhance the quality and delivery of services through efficiency and innovation.
  • Provides utility locate services for water and wastewater installation and third-party conflict identification as required.
  • Adheres to guidelines as set out in Leduc County’s policies and administrative directives.
  • Accountable for working in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and participation in the Health, Safety and Wellness Program.
  • Performs related duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

What you need to succeed

Must-have

  • A diploma in water and wastewater technology and certification in Water Distribution (Level II), Wastewater Collection (Level II), Wastewater Treatment (Level I).
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of municipal water, wastewater, and solid waste infrastructure.
  • Confined Space Entry and Monitor, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Standard First Aid, Ground Disturbance for Supervisors, hydrogen sulfide (H2S Alive) courses.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • An Alberta Class 5 driver’s license, criminal record check satisfactory to Leduc County and the ability to obtain security and health clearance at the Edmonton International Airport is required.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Geographic Information System (GIS).
