Summary

The Summer Events Leader – JET Lead temporary summer position (9 weeks) assists with providing quality summer programs for Sturgeon County children/youth. The role focuses on assisting with the Job Experience Training (JET) program which helps young people gain hand-on work experience, develop employability and leadership skills, and explore potential careers through real-world municipal and community-based roles.

This position is offered through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. As a CSJ position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment
  • period*;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period
as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
**International students are not eligible participants.

Key Responsibilities

Summer Programs Assistance (85%)

  • Assists with the implementation and evaluation of a traveling rural summer programs including Theme Days, Day Trips, Free Summer Bonus Days, and Community Engagements
  • Provides active and supportive involvement in all programs and planned activities.
  • Ensures that an effective and professional working relationships with fellow staff, children, parents, and volunteers is maintained.
  • Ensures that all program locations used are kept clean and secure as well as safe for program activities.
  • Ensures that an effective relation with fellow staff, children, parents, and volunteers is maintained.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports as required by their supervisor (i.e., accident reports, daily time sheets, program statistics, final program reports, JET evaluation tracking etc.)
  • Prepares crafts and activities for summer programs. Specifically, programs tailored to JET mentorship and professional development.
  • May be required to assist with alternative programming based on need.

Volunteer Training and Evaluation (5%)

  • Assists with training and evaluation of volunteers in the Job Experience Training (JET) program.
  • Ensures that an effective and professional working relationships with fellow staff and volunteers is maintained.
  • In collaboration with the Summer Event Programmer, acts as a direct mentor for JET participants.

Other Related Duties (10%)

  • Attends scheduled staff meetings, complete a mid and final evaluation on self and co-workers.
  • Attends training sessions and workshops as required.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Requirements

Required:

  • Previous experience working with children and youth in a program setting.
  • High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • A clear Criminal Record (Vulnerable Sector) and Child Intervention Record Check is required.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Post-secondary education in recreation, education or another related field would be an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others and alone with little or no supervision.
  • Punctuality, self-motivation, open communication, and ability to take direction well and respond to public inquiries in a calm and friendly manner.

Assets:

  • Previous experience volunteering as a Sturgeon County JET.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products is an asset.
