About the Role

Summer students will assist solid waste employees with a variety of light-duty, labour-based tasks that support landfill, recycling, and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Duties will vary day to day and may include the following:

  • Paint buildings, fencing, bins, and other solid waste assets
  • Grass cutting, trimming, and general groundskeeping
  • Litter picking and site clean-up at landfill, transfer stations, and surrounding areas
  • Assist with general maintenance and upkeep of solid waste facilities and equipment
  • Light-duty labour tasks as assigned by solid waste operations employees
  • Support recycling and waste diversion initiatives as required
  • Work safely and cooperatively as part of a team in an outdoor environment
  • Hours of work for this summer position are 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday-Friday

Summer interns are expected to:

  • Understand and follow safety regulations and work to a high level of safety
  • Contribute towards building a strong team

Requirements

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada without limitations
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, class 5 minimum
  • Have a desire to learn the aspects of water and wastewater operations
  • Students must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite
  • Must provide their own steel-toed footwear
  • All other PPE will be provided

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid license, Class 5 minimum
  • Driver’s abstract satisfactory to the employer
  • Pass 50 lb. fitness test
  • Pass comprehensive drug and alcohol test

Salary Range

Compensation is per the CUPE, Local 787 Collective Agreement. Rate of pay for this position is $19.00 per hour.
