Summary

This position supports efficient collection and entry of basic property data while building experience in the valuation of properties for tax purposes. The incumbent will assist assessors with organizing and entry of basic property assessment data into a computer system and basic desktop and field inspections. They may occasionally assist in communicating basic assessment information to rate payers, general public, and various in-house professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Application Data Collection and Administration (60%)

  • Assists in reviewing existing assessment data for correctness.
  • Assists with updating existing assessment data into department file system or CAMA system.
  • Provides vacation coverage for other positions as needed.

Inspection Assistance (20%)

  • Performs residential properties image updates within defined area of municipality.
  • Communicates out of scope data to supervisor.

Other Related Duties (20%)

  • Completes special projects as required.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Requirements

The following are required in this position:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Assessment procedures.
  • Enrolled in an Assessment/Appraisal program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office
  • Understands use of GIS.
  • Ability to read and understand a map using the legal land description.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with taxpayers, general public and various professionals.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Completed at least five education courses in recognised post secondary assessment and appraisal program, or Business administration program.

The following are considered assets or preferences in this position:

  • Theoretical knowledge of property valuation for property tax purposes.
  • First or second year student of a recognized assessment or property valuation program.
  • Microsoft office, General computer skills, ability to navigate rural land descriptions.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS

  • This position works in an office or office-like environment with an expectation of travel to rural sites.
  • The working environment is deadline driven and involves multitasking and managing priorities.
  • The indoor work requires limited physical requirements of walking, bending, standing, or reaching.
  • As this position travels to rural sites, there may be moderate time sitting in and getting in and out of a vehicle, as well as walking around sites where terrain may be uneven, with exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • The position has the control over when to travel or not.
  • This position may have longer periods of time sitting/standing at a desk with visual concentration, but the position has control over when to take breaks.
  • Interruptions and distractions occur but are not expected to interfere with the ability to complete the work required.
