The Opportunity

The Deputy Chief plays a key leadership role in shaping the future of fire and emergency services within the City of Wetaskiwin. This position offers the chance to combine hands-on operational leadership with strategic oversight, helping to ensure the continued delivery of safe and effective fire services.

As Deputy Chief you will:

  • Play a role in influencing the department’s strategy and operational readiness.
  • Mentor and develop firefighters.
  • Champion training, safety, compliance, and best practices,
  • Strengthening community safety through prevention and public education initiatives (partnerships).
  • Contribute meaningfully to a collaborative leadership team and serve as a trusted advisor and second-in-command to the Fire Chief.
  • Make a visible impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental policies, procedures, inspections and investigations, training and administrative processes.
  • Provide oversight for the fire department training program, ensuring weekly training sessions, firefighter skill assessments, and performance evaluations support operational readiness and continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, mentorship, and guidance to direct reports, while supporting professional growth through development opportunities and the facilitation of individual development plans.
  • Respond to emergency situations within the City of Wetaskiwin response area, industry or other agencies as required or requested.
  • Ensure post-incident review and continuous improvement process.
  • Ensure department compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Code of Practice for Firefighters.
  • Assist with the hiring, evaluation and performance management of all firefighters.
  • Oversee the fire prevention program.
  • Support the Fire Chief in overall department leadership and assume full operational responsibility and administrative authority in their absence.
  • Participate in budget development, capital planning, and resource allocation.
  • Lead the inspection program in accordance with The City of Wetaskiwin’s Quality Management Plan (QMP)
  • Complete fire inspections within The City of Wetaskiwin.
  • Complete fire investigations to determine cause and origin.
  • Oversee the management of preventative maintenance and replacement of equipment and apparatus.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • NFPA 1001 Level 2 Firefighter.
  • NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator.
  • NFPA 1031 Level 1 Safety Codes Officer in Fire Discipline (B1), and completion of Level 2 (B2) within the first year of employment.
  • Minimum of Seven (7) years of firefighting experience with a minimum of three (3) years in a senior management role.
  • Experienced in providing administrative and technical advice on operational matters, and in recommending policies and procedures.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 (or higher) driver’s license.
