Summary

The County of Vermilion River is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our safety-oriented team as a Heavy Equipment Operator in our Public Works Department. Reporting to the Roads Manager, this position is responsible for operating heavy equipment which may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, skid steers, mulchers, excavators, snow blowers and other pieces of equipment, always complying with safe work practices and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain roads and transportation systems to ensure safe roadways within the County.
• Ensure access to houses, water supply and waste sites.
• Maintain easements.
• Perform pre-winter, winter, spring, and summer maintenance on roads.
• Use equipment for snow removal.
• Use equipment to level and grade roads and ensure proper surface drainage.
• Ability to operate equipment trailers, gravel trailers, or any other trailer towing.
• Perform mulching of brush and trees within Road Right of Ways and County properties.
• Perform daily servicing including greasing and oil level checks.
• Respond to inquiries by the public in a courteous, polite manner.
• Make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

• Acceptable Criminal Record Check.
• Able to work under minimal supervision.
• Able to deal with the public in confrontational situations and must use own judgement to resolve them.

Requirements

• Two (2) years of previous experience operating heavy equipment.
• Physically capable of undertaking general labour duties, and able to undertake maintenance and repairs.
• Must have valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
