Summary

Reporting to the General Manager of Planning and Intergovernmental Relations, the Economic Development Officer will focus on strengthening the local economy by building strong relationships with existing businesses to support their retention and growth, assist with coordinating businesses’ planning and development processes, and delivering programs and events that promote economic development and community prosperity. The position will prepare reports and presentations for Council and Committees, as well as provide project support on major economic development initiatives.

This position is ideal for a candidate who enjoys a mix of outreach, project coordination, research, and event delivery, and who is passionate about supporting a thriving local economy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Customer Outreach and Relationship Management
• Support businesses through the development process, liaising with Planning & Development, Engineering, and other departments, as needed.
• Assist new investors or businesses with permitting, zoning, and site selection once a lead is brought in.
• Conduct regular outreach and meetings with local businesses to identify challenges, opportunities, and support needs.
• Develop and maintain a Business Retention and Expansion database to track business visits and follow-up actions required.

2. Business Promotion
• Plan and deliver business support programming (e.g., workshops, networking events, business appreciation activities) to foster a pro business environment in Cypress County
• Coordinate and support events, investment tours, and other promotional initiatives.
• Contribute to marketing and communications efforts that promote business success stories and County initiatives.

3. Compliance, Ethics, and Professional Standards
• Work in accordance with Cypress County’s Health and Safety Program requirements and the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code.
• Display a high level of professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
5. Additional Responsibilities
• Maintain effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, and regulatory bodies to implement the County’s economic development strategy.
• Attend training and professional development, as required.
• Carry out other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A university degree (or certificate) in Economic Development, Planning, Business, or related field.
A minimum of two (2) years of economic development, business relations or business planning experience, preferably in a local government setting.
Event planning and coordination experience preferred.
Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Take initiative and exhibit both integrity and professionalism while representing the County.
Have excellent organizational, communication and problem-solving skills
Enjoy working collaboratively with a wide range of people.
A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.
