Summary

This position is instrumental in supporting the execution of major events, special projects, and fostering community partnerships in Sturgeon County. The Sponsorship & Corporate Events Advisor also implements the county’s Sponsorship Policy. This role is designed to align with the County’s strategic vision, focusing on enhancing community connections, elevating the organization’s profile, and contributing to its reputation while bolstering community vitality. This position works closely with the Manager, Communications & Engagement, providing essential support and contributing to the County’s overall mission.

Key Responsibilities

Community Relations, Reputational Enhancement, and Events (40%)

• Oversees the development, planning, and execution of external signature events to produce high-quality, brand-aligned events to raise the profile of Sturgeon County, as assigned.
• Oversees the development, planning, and execution of internal events to produce meaningful and engaging experiences for Sturgeon County staff members, as assigned.
• Organizes staffing, training and logistics for all assigned events.
• Collaborates with Council, Leadership Team, and internal departments to ensure their feedback is incorporated into event design and execution.
• Acts as a subject matter expert to support department-led events through the provision of best-practice checklists and advice.
• Identifies and mitigates hazards to ensure safety of staff members and members of the public.
• Interprets and applies local, provincial and health regulations to ensure event compliance.
• Monitors and reports on budget and associated tasks, including securing quotes, contract management, processing invoices, and obtaining invoice approvals.
• Facilitates communication with external vendors, venues, and partners to ensure seamless event execution.
• Assists in developing community relations strategies to enhance Sturgeon County’s connection with residents.
• Supports the other Community Relations Advisor in support of their events.
• Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the impact of events and community relations activities through the meaningful collection of metrics and data analysis.

Sponsorship Policy (30%)
• Implements and administers the county’s Sponsorship Program across the organization to ensure consistent use.
• Develops and conducts organizational training on the County’s Sponsorship Program.
• Interprets the policy and provides advice to all areas of the county on incoming and outgoing sponsorship opportunities.
• Exercises sound judgment and decision-making authority in evaluating sponsorship proposals to determine approvals in alignment with established criteria.
• Researches and establishes strategic sponsorship opportunities for County initiatives, including special events, in addition to other opportunities brought forward by other parts of the organization.
• Works with local businesses to develop long-term relationships resulting in the sponsorship of County initiatives.

Administrative Duties (15%)
• Assist with coordination of meetings, including logistics.
• Responsible for supporting the County’s Records and Information Management Program through the maintenance, control, and disposition of the records for County Commissioner’s Office.
• Provide coverage and backup support to the other Sponsorship & Corporate Events Advisor.
• Prepare expense claims, reconcile, and code corporate credit cards.
• Code invoices to appropriate general ledger and assist in monitoring budget expenditures.
• Serve as main information management contact, attending meetings and collaborate on best practices/process improvement.
• Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations.

Other Related Duties (15%)
• Assist with the preparation of Request for Decisions, Informal Briefings to Council, or Leadership Team presentations related to assigned projects.
• Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
• Support the work of the Corporate Communications and Digital Communications teams, where necessary.
• Perform special projects, as required.

Requirements

The following are required in this position:

• Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
• Valid Alberta Class Five driver’s license is required.
• Strong background in community relations and event planning or coordination
• Basic understanding of strategic planning and project management principles.
• Familiarity with community trends, stakeholder management, and Sturgeon County’s residential and business environments is an asset.

• Post–secondary degree or diploma in business administration, Communications, Public Administration, or another related field (equivalent combinations of education with relevant progressive experience may be considered).

• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to engage with diverse stakeholders clearly and concisely, with keen attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to anticipate and think critically about potential organizational impacts, regional decisions, and internal policy directions.
• Capacity to adapt to changing and sometimes demanding workloads, with the ability to communicate progress and next steps effectively.
• Basic understanding of public policies, procedures, and municipal government operations, with a willingness to learn and grow in this area.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, comfortable interacting with elected officials, senior leadership, colleagues, and external partners to build trust and credibility.
• Developing financial, business, and political awareness, capable of navigating politically sensitive environments with discretion and handling confidential matters professionally.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment, contributing effectively to shared goals and projects.
• Awareness of Indigenous protocols and a commitment to fostering respectful relationships with Indigenous communities.

The following are considered assets or preferences in this position:

• Three (3) years or more professional experience, preferably in a municipal or other public sector setting.
• Three (3) years or more in a corporate communications environment.
• Three (3) years or more of event coordination experience.
